Synthesis

Though political science and teaching are two fields that are wrongly misrepresented in society, they both have the common goal of making an impact on the community.

Here are some of the misrepresentations of the fields:

Political Science / Government
Teachers
-Most Poly Sci majors are going to be lawyers or politicians

-There are no suitable careers for political science majors

-The government is not beneficial to society

-The overall premise of government is corrupt
-Teachers are undereducated because it is easier to get into Education programs at most universities (Teaching is a B-List Job?)

-Teachers hate their jobs because they are underpaid (Chicago Public School Salary Issues)

These misrepresentations, no matter how diluted they are, don’t take away from what these particular fields actually do and accomplish. Both the realities of political science and teaching involve effecting the lives of others around them.

Realities of the Political Science (Government) Field
-There are a lot of careers out there for Poly Sci Majors (Careers)

-The processes of government regulate our everyday lives and makes them better, not worse. (Government in our Daily Lives)

- Small decisions made every day by the government change people's lives forever, sometimes without realizing the repercussions. (The United Nations is Just Wrong)

Realities of the Teaching Field
-Teachers love what they do and teach with a passion, which affects their students by encouraging them to be excited to learn.  (Musical Morning Motivation)

-They do what they do because they want the kids to be better.

-People with higher SAT scores are going into the teaching profession (Positive Outlook on the Future of Teaching)

This blog was much more than just writing down issues that pertained to our majors. This project forced us to research, analyze and interpret information through our point of view. After it’s all said and done, we each formed new conclusions and gained more knowledge about our preferred field that we can take with us moving forward.

Riley: At first I thought this blog project was going to be a burden, but it was interesting. Every week I not only learned, but researched and analyzed a different aspect of political science and government. From careers to protests, and in return, I’ve gained a lot of insight. The biggest takeaway from these posts is that I could narrow down what parts of this major interested me and what parts didn’t. This knowledge will benefit me in my future endeavors, whatever path I take. This blog just reinforced the reason why I wanted to be a political science major in the first place, and that’s because I can use this knowledge and these skills to help others in a variety of ways.

Eric: Going into this blog I was unsure of what direction or form it would take. I knew I was majoring in political science and I knew why I was doing it, however I was unsure as to what it meant. This blog has helped me to realize that the little things you can do for a person can truly change their lives. Being in politics or in government does not necessarily mean you just say things to get elected, it can mean that a person truly wants to see the world become a better place. Going forward I will continue to help as many people as I can and will not give up on my goal of making a difference in the world, one person at a time.

Jenna: From the 10 weeks of research I have done on the profession of teaching, I have concluded that though teachers are undervalued and underestimated, they still forge on and do what they love to make a difference in the world. They hold the fate of all their student’s futures in their hands in short class periods. Walking away from this project I have learned how much time and effort teachers put into their jobs and have gained a lot more respect for my past teachers and current professors. The knowledge I obtained from this project will help me decide whether I am going to continue as a sole psychology major, or begin an education path.
